Post Date:04/02/2026 6:00 AM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (April 2, 2026) -- The Montgomery County Commission has announced that applications are open for its Summer Apprenticeship Program, giving local students and young adults the opportunity to gain hands-on, real-world experience while learning how local government operates across a variety of departments.

Through the eight-week program, participants are placed within County offices where they work alongside staff and leadership in areas such as public administration, public safety, infrastructure, communications, and community services. The experience provides a behind-the-scenes look at how services are delivered and how decisions are made at the local level.

“This program gives participants a unique, firsthand look at how county government works day to day,” said Commission Chairman Doug Singleton. “It allows them to be part of the process, contribute in meaningful ways, and walk away with a better understanding of how their local government serves the community.”

Participants gain practical experience by assisting with projects, observing operations, and engaging directly with professionals in the field. The program is designed to help participants build confidence, develop professional skills, and better understand potential career paths within public service and beyond.

Vice Chairman Carmen Moore-Zeigler emphasized the value of exposure and engagement.

“Opportunities like this allow our young people to see government in action,” Moore-Zeigler said. “It helps them understand the impact of public service and how the work being done every day directly affects our residents and our community.”

The Summer Apprenticeship Program continues to serve as a meaningful way for participants to connect with their community, gain valuable experience, and develop a deeper appreciation for the role of local government.
